The Various Types of Buzzes

Image
Every person has certain drinks that they know to avoid less they want to suffer the consequences later on. For some it’s Whiskey, others it’s Vodka, and for many it’s Tequila. There are even common maxims, that if followed, are believed will help to avoid becoming sick later on, such as “liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.” But do different forms of liquor have different buzzes that are associated with them? Another question would be whether certain people, physically, are able to handle certain types of drinks better than others. Well I am no doctor, but I know for myself that I can drink most beers without fear of consequences. Even various types of liquor will not make me feel terrible if consumed. But certain ones seem to hit me harder, and have different affects associated with them. For instance, I will not necessarily become sick from drinking tequila, but I feel extremely heavy and drunk after a few shots. This doesn’t happen say with vodka or gin. But then even withi...

Understanding Fluid Dynamics in White Water Rafting

Since I moved to Colorado, white water rafting has become a huge part of my life. Maybe its the mountain air, or the fact that everyone is into sports, but I bet anyone $20 that you'll be involved in some sort of new outdoor sport after living here for more than three months. You will also meet a ton of people that are more into the sport than you ever expected. Because of my hobby, I've had the privilege to meet some of the best river guides in the United States, and pick their brains about how they identify good rapids. Quite surprisingly, the identification of awesome rapids to take trips on is not done with observation or intuition in the classical sense. It comes from a serious grasp of fluid dynamics. Fluid dynamics is the study of the physical forces involved when interacting with water. I was introduced to the concept by one of the expert guides I had the privilege to go on a private trip with. I asked how I could quickly learn how to read the river like they do, and ...

How Can Hazelnuts Make You Healthier?

Image
Who would have thought that a food as small and insubstantial looking as the humble hazelnut could be such a powerful aid towards good health! Packed inside every hazelnut is a rich source of calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium, protein and dietary fibers. And here’s something else you probably didn’t know about hazelnuts, Turkey produces by far the most hazelnuts of any country in the world. And there is documentary evidence that they have been produced as a significant food source for well over 9000 years – that’s around 7000 years before Christ. Harvest time for hazelnuts is in mid-autumn when the trees drop their nuts and leaves. Most commercial growers take the sensible approach and let the rich bounty simply drop to the floor rather than use expensive and cumbersome equipment to shake them from the trees. Health benefits of hazelnuts abound. They are extremely high in antioxidants which help to rid the body of harmful free radicals, the cause of serious diseases inc...

How 3D TV Glasses Work

Image
If you have ever seen a movie in 3D, you may have been curious as to how the whole three-dimensional phenomenon exists. This curiosity has led you to this situation: You are sitting in a 3D movie when you get the inclination to take off your glasses and try watching the movie without them. Maybe by doing this sneaky move you will find out how 3D is possible, but when you take them off, all you see is a blurry screen with red and blue lines all over the screen. Some people think that 3D TVs possess everything it needs to be 3D inside the actual television, but this is not the case. In order for 3D TV to work, it needs the help of those glasses. 3D glasses actually come in two forms: passive and active. Each form of 3D glasses works much differently than the other, but even with their differences, they both have the same goal in mind—to trick your brain into depth illusion and to produce movies and TV shows in 3D. How Active 3D Glasses Work Active 3D glasses are small LCD screens t...

(re)Learning how to Tie our Shoes

Image
We didn't have internet back when I was learning how to tie my shoelaces; and I only knew one way. Some months back I learned a better way to tie my shoes, when Terry Moore shared with TED talks (video below) a 'strong form of the knot'. It's a small variation of the traditional method I was taught; he pulls the string around the loop the opposite way from what I originally learned. Tying them this way he says is much better as they're less likely to untie. And I've noticed I haven't had to re-tie my shoe in a while now. Today I came across this article on Health.net 'Lace Them Up: How to Stop pain With Shoelaces' , teaching me three new ways to tie my shoes if I ever experience foot pains or loose heels. Or if the shoes are too tight, I can use two laces per shoe like in the picture to the left. Thanks to the internet, our kids can now grow up knowing several ways to tie their shoelaces
